Magnetic deflection mass spectrograph in which a sheet of ions is injected into the air gap of a magnetic circuit, parallel to the plane of the pole pieces. The circular ion trajectories corresponding to the same mass admit a common tangent. For a suitable value of the acceleration voltage, this tangent is level with the collection device and the corresponding ions are captured. This system allows the use of a source and a very long ion-extraction slit with a very narrow air gap. Relative to the existing systems, the sensitivity is much greater and the bulk is substantially reduced. The apparatus is quite obviously intended for monitoring low-pressure gas mixtures both in the laboratory and within industrial procedures. <IMAGE>
