PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield and selectivity, by reacting 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone with an alkylene halohydrin in the presence of an alkali while adjusting the molar ratio of the alkali to the 2,4- dihydroxybenzophenone to a specific level. CONSTITUTION:The objective 2-hydroxy-4-hydroxyalkoxybenzophenone is produced by reacting 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone with an alkylene halohydrin (e.g. ethylene chlorohydrin) in the presence of an alkali. The reaction is carried out while controlling the molar ratio of the alkali and the 2,4- dihydroxybenzophenone existing in the reaction system to >=1.2, usually 0.1-1.2, preferably 0.5-1.2 (e.g. by adding the alkali intermittently or continuously to the reaction system). USE:An ultraviolet absorber or raw material of ultraviolet absorber. |
