NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R is formula II, formula III). EXAMPLE:Thiolstatine A. USE:A peptide enzyme inhibitor. Especially, it has strong inhibition activity to thiol protease and is used as a remedy for muscular dystrophy and as a contraceptive. PREPARATION:The objective substance is obtained from the culture mixture or cell bodies of Bacillus cereus (FERM-P8044). The culture is carried out usually at 4.0-9.0pH, 15-40 deg.C under shaking or aeration with agitation. After culture, the mixture is extracted with an organic solvent and subjected to a variety of chromatography to effect isolation and purification. In order to collect thiolstatine in cell bodies, the bodies are collected by, e.g., centrifugation, crushed by treatment with ultrasonic waves to elute out thiolstatine and the substance is isolated and purified.
