NEW MATERIAL:An optically active liquid crystal compound shown by the formula I (m is 1-8; n is 5-14; * is asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:(S)-5-(n-Undecyloxy)-2-[4-(2-methylbutyloxy)phenyl]pyr-imidine. USE:A ferroelectric chiral smetic liquid crystal compound, showing a chiral smetic phase in a temperature range a little higher than room temperature, high response, improved chemical stability and improved compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds, useful as a ferro-electric liquid crystal display element in a high-speed response requiring field such as a multi-divided moving display panel, high-speed optical shutter, etc. PREPARATION:For example, a compound shown by the formula II (X is trisulfonyloxy, or mesyloxy) is reacted with a compound shown by the formula III in a solvent such as dimethylformamide, etc., in the presence of an alkali metal hydride such as NaH, etc., to give a compound shown by the formula I.
