Use of a unique combination of jet (6) formation, and spacing of high voltage electrodes minimizes jet disintegration and subsequent flashover between boiler jet feedwater header (4, 37) and high voltage jet receiving electrode (10). The invention avoids flashover caused by intersecting or colliding vertically disposed jets. Jet collision (41) produces disintegration or "splashing" of generally cylindrical jets (6) at critical portions adjacent to the high voltage receiving and flow channeling electrode (10). Units constructed utilizing the disclosed configuration provide reduced boiler flashover at normal voltages and extension of operating range to substantially high voltages. Preferably the ratio of header to electrode spacing 48 to nozzle length 9 is less than 1.88 and the set contacting surface of electrode 10 has edges (17, fig. 4) which cooperate to channel the water flow. <IMAGE> |
