PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having high fluidity even at a high concentration, by reacting an acrylamide polymer with a hypohalous acid salt, reducing and neutralizing the reaction product, cooling at a specific temperature and adjusting the content of univalent acid salt at a specific level. CONSTITUTION:An acrylamide polymer (e.g. homopolymer of acrylamide) is made to react with 1.0-2.5 mol of a hypohalous acid salt (e.g. NaClO) based on 1 mol of the amide group of the polymer in an aqueous solution, reduced with 0.05-0.1 mol of a reducing agent (e.g. Na2S2O3) based on 1 mol of the hypohalous acid salt, and neutralized. The obtained mixture is cooled to <=20 deg.C, and the concentration of the univalent acid salt (e.g. NaCl) in the separated and recovered pasty polymer is adjusted to 15-40 wt% based on water. EFFECT:The agglomeration of the polymer with time can be prevented by adjusting the concentration of the univalent acid salt at a high level.
