The invention relates to an apparatus for controlling the web tension of material webs, especially during the drawing of a material web from a roll. The aim of the invention is to provide an apparatus for controlling the web tension which has a simpler construction and which necessitates a lower outlay. The technical object is to design the apparatus so that there is no need for a complicated regulation and the control takes place only during starting and braking. The object is achieved in that the transport device with less inertia is assigned a control device which carries out a control corresponding to the movement cycle of the transport device with the greatest inertia during starting and braking. The control device is preferably constructed from an electronic timer and a device serving for generating a constant minimum tension of the material web. <IMAGE>
