A method for the automatic subscriber search in multi-cellular radio networks, in which the mobile switching centres of the radio network are connected to one another via wire lines and a telephone subscriber triggers the sending out of a staggered search call via several mobile switching centres to a moving radio subscriber of unknown location by dialling up a mobile switching centre. The telephone subscriber dials up the mobile switching centre (KE2) in whose radio cell he suspects the radio subscriber to be located, and the mobile call number (22) of the mobile subscriber and as suffix his own call number (71421). The mobile switching centre dialled transmits a predetermined number of calls via its connected transceiver system to the mobile subscriber. If he is not reached, the mobile switching centre forwards a subscriber information consisting of the mobile call number (22) of the mobile subscriber and the call number (71421) of the telephone subscriber to the next mobile switching centre and itself goes into idle mode.
