An appliance for testing the authenticity of security marks, especially for testing watermarks in postage stamps, is known, having a light source 8 and a transparent disk 5, the security mark being capable of being pressed against the disk 5 by means of a press-down device which has a pressing part 9 with a pressing bolt 11 and a press-down device displacing the pressing part relative to the disk 5 via the pressing bolt, and having a housing 1, 2 which absorbs the pressing forces, the housing having a recess for introducing the security mark, and the light source 8 illuminating the disk 5 parallel to the bearing face of the pressing part against the disk. In order to provide an appliance which, in particular, is also suitable for large-format test material, which guarantees a functionally reliable mode of operation, even when working with high press-down forces, and furthermore which can be handled easily and works with the same press-down force from one test to the next, the press-down device is an electromotively driven device and the electric motor 22 for releasing the pressing part 9 from the disk 5 starts up, at least briefly, without any load. <IMAGE>
