PURPOSE:To record a control signal that indicates the position of a magnetic tape by a recording pattern constituting combinedly of the positive pole part of one level, negative pole part of one level and a non-recording part between the positive and negative poles. CONSTITUTION:Recording pattern of pulses outputted from a pulse generating circuit 1 is constituted of the positive pole part of one level, negative pole part of one level and a non-recording part between the positive and negative poles, and the pattern is superposed on a specified bias signal and recorded in a track nearly parallel to the direction of running of a magnetic tape. For instance, address information, recording mode information, information of date and time of recording etc. can be recorded by using a specific pattern in which the positive pole part of 1 bit, no recording part and negative pole part continue as a header, and directly following part of specific part as data part. Thus, control signals that indicate the position of a magnetic tape are recorded by combination of three parts, accordingly, recording of address information and other information make possible.
