PURPOSE:To attain the extraction of a check writer character having lots of background colors by applying a reflected light to red, blue, green optical filters, applying photoelectric conversion to the transmitted light and executing the operating processing to the character image obtained in this way. CONSTITUTION:The reflected light 100 passed through optical filters 11, 12, 13 transmitting each component of blue, red, green and becomes respectively blue, red, green lights 101, 102, 103, and they are subject to photoelectric conversion by photoelectric conversion sections 21, 22, 23. Blue, red, green transmission analog electric signals 111, 112, 113 subject to photoelectric conversion are converted into blue, red, green transmission digital electric signals 121, 122 123 by analog/digital converting sections 31, 32, 33. An operating processing section 40 inputs the digital signals, ANDs them to generate extracted character image information 131. Thus, even when the background colors of a character consist of red, blue, green strips, the check writer character is extracted without error.
