PURPOSE:To facilitate detecting program positions when multitrack PCM digital signals are recorded, by recording respective position detection signals of tracks in positions which divide a part between header parts at intervals of a certain length. CONSTITUTION:Position detection signals consist of header parts, which are recorded at intervals of a certain time, and head locating signals of tracks 1-6 which divide the part between header parts on the time base, and only the header part is recorded in the tape position which is not a normal head locating position. In head locating positions of tracks 1-6, signals indicated by broken lines in the figure are recorded continuously over a certain time. Search signals recorded on a cur track or an audio track of a tape forwarded fast in the cur/review state are reproduced by a fixed head 1 and are amplified by an amplifier 2 and have the waveform shaped by a waveform shaping circuit 3, and fundamental clocks are taken out by a header detecting circuit 4, and clocks which sample respective head locating signals of tracks are generated by a sampling clock generating circuit 5. A position detecting circuit 6 generates respective search signals of tracks in accordance with head locating signals and sampling clocks.
