PURPOSE:To attain optical disc processing suitable for high-density recording with high reliability by detecting a boundary pattern of plural bytes depending on an illegal code in a read signal from a medium recording an output of a data write section to discriminate the data start position. CONSTITUTION:When a data area detection circuit 62 is set at a point of time earlier than the correct data start position because of error in read data, the number of illegal detection signals 204 inputted thereafter by a data position error detection circuit 63 is counted and the count is fed to a control circuit 1 and an error correction circuit 6. The control circuit 1 and the error correction circuit 6 process to eliminate the 1st unnecessary several bytes depending on the count for re-positioning. When any of plural boundary pattern bytes is detected correctly, even when a part of the boundary pattern byte has a defect, a correct data start position is recognized to read the data. Thus, an optical disc device with high density is obtained.
