PURPOSE:To realize a sure read processing with high efficiency by using a display means to display detecting and segmenting information generated by a detecting and segmenting means while characters and direction of a character line are distinguished so as to reduce a support job by a operator. CONSTITUTION:When the document of a read object is scanned by a photoelectric converting section 10, a picture data comprised of a picture signal is stored in an image buffer 11. Then a detecting and segmenting section 12 applies the identification of a character and a graphic from the picture data in the image buffer 11. Further, the detecting and segmenting section 12 detects a character line, a character size, a character pitch and the direction of the character and character line to the identified character picture and the character is sectioned at every character. In this case, the detecting and segmenting information generated at every section of each character is stored to a data buffer 17 from the section 12. Similarly, the segmenting frame information generated in detecting and segmenting the graphic is stored in the data buffer 17.
