PURPOSE:To obtain a sealed lead-acid battery having long life by using a multiple layer separator obtained by forming gelled layers on both sides of a nonwoven fabric mainly comprising glass fibers capable of retaining electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A nonwoven fabric 1 consists of glass fine fibers. Gelled layers 2 are obtained by spreading sol having high viscosity and no fluidity prepared by adding sulfuric acid to sodium silicate solution on the surfaces of the nonwoven fabric 1. The cross section of the multilayer separator is divided into three layers of gelled layer 2, nonwoven fabric 1, and gelled layer 2. Some of the gelled layer exist within the nonwoven fabric 1 in the boundary, but the nonwoven fabric keeps its own thickness. Therefore, short circuit in the early stage is prevented and long life is obtained. |
