PURPOSE:To make possible the exact detection of a liquid crystal temp. by forming a temp. detecting electrode via an insulating film on a heating electrode and measuring the resistance value of the temp. detecting electrode. CONSTITUTION:A smectic liquid crystal is smectic at an ordinary temp. and a voltage VH is impressed to the heating electrode 13 from this state. The impression of the voltage VH is stopped and at the same time a signal voltage VS is impressed to a signal electrode 11 corresponding to a display picture element until TSN or below is attained when the temp. of the smectic liquid crystal increases up to the temp. TNI at which the liquid crystal exhibits no longer the properties of the liquid crystal or above. The molecular arrangement of the display picture element part where the long axis direction of the molecules of the liquid crystal is perpendicular to the 1st and 2nd electrode substrates 10, 12 in the nematic state remains perpendicular as it is and said part is transparent. The molecular arrangement of the display picture element part having no potential difference is irregular as it is and said part is milky white as a result of the scattered light. The temp. of the liquid crystal is detected by connecting the electrode 15 to a resistance measuring circuit and measuring the resistance value of the electrode 15. |
