In the prepn. of hydrazine hydrate with the oxidn. of NH3 with molecular oxygen in the liquid phase followed by hydrolysis of the azine formed, the novel feature is that the oxidation is effected with a peroxide system resulting from the partial autoxidation of a sec. alcohol with molecular oxygen or a gaseous mixt. contg. oxygen. - Pref. the sec. alcohol is of formula (I) R1R2CHOH (I) R1 and R2 = opt. branched alkyl or cycloalkyl contg.up to 10C, or phenyl opt. substd. by substituents which are stable during the reaction, or R1 and R2 may together form an opt. branched 3-11C alkylene. - The peroxide system results from the autoxidation of (I) at 30-180 deg. C, the reaction taking place in the absence of NH3 and under sufficient pressure to keep the components of the reaction mixt. in the liquid phase. Conversion rate of (I) is 5-30%. More pref. the autoxidation is in the presence of the ketone corresponding to (I) and also of a diluent company the nonconverted (I), the ketone and/or water.
