PURPOSE:To reduce the amount of a dialkyl sulfate used, and to obtain the titled compound in high yield, by reacting a halogenophenol with a dialkyl sulfate in a specific ratio while keeping a temperature >=a fixed temperature and removing water existing in a system to the outside of the system. CONSTITUTION:A halogenophenol (e.g., o-chlorophenol, etc.) and a dialkyl sulfate (e.g., diethyl sulfate, etc.) are subjected to o-alkylation in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide, etc. to give an alkoxyhalogenobenzene (e.g., o-chlorophenotole, etc.). In the reaction, <=1mol, preferably 0.3-0.8mol dialkyl sulfate is used based on 1mol halogenophenol, the reaction temperature is kept >=100 deg.C at lowest, and water existing in the reaction system is removed to the outside of the system. USE:An intermediate for producing agricultural chemicals, drugs, dye, etc.
