PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound excellent in heat resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical strength, etc., by polycondensing an aromatic dihydroxy compound component with a dihalogenoaromatic ketone component in a solvent comprising a (thio)xanthone compound. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic dihydroxy compound component of formula II (wherein Ar is an aromatic residue), e.g., 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone (alkali metal salt), is reacted with a dihalogenoaromatic ketone component of formula III (wherein Ar' is an aromatic residue containing at least one benzophenone unit and X is a halogen bonded to a carbon ortho or para to the keto group of a terminal aromatic ring), e.g., a dihalogenobenzenoid compound, in an amount to provide a ratio of the total OH to the halogen of 1/0.95-1.05 (molar ratio) by heating at 200-400 deg.C in the presence of, if necessary, an alkali in an amount to provide a 0.3-2g atom of the alkali metal per mol of the OH groups in a solvent comprising a (thio)xanthone compound of formula I (wherein R and R' are each H, a 1-3C alkyl, or phenyl and Y is O or S).
