PURPOSE:To purify crude 1,4-butanediol by a common separating means in high purity, by hydrogenating crude 1,4-butanediol containing a specific impurity which is not easily separated by distillation, in the presence of a catalyst, so that the impurity is converted into a compound which is easily separated by distillation. CONSTITUTION:Crude 1,4-butanediol (crude 1,4-BG) containing at least one of 2-(4'-hydroxybutoxy)tetrahydrofuran, 2-(4'-oxobutoxy)tetrahydrofuran and 1,4-di-(2'-tetrahydrofuroxy)butane as an impurity is hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, especially a supported catalyst of platinum element, the impurity which is not easily separated by distillation is converted into tetrahydrofuran, 1,4-BG, and butanol which can be separated while suppressing decomposition of 1,4-BG, and high-purity 1,4-BG useful as a raw material for polyester, etc., is obtained from the crude substance by a common separating means such as distillation, etc. |
