A hollow wire of precious metal with a seam (3) running longitudinally along its length, is fed into an automatic seal positioner. An optical sensor (24-28) detects the position of the seam (S) in relation to a defined working band width (B) of the sensor on the surface of the continuously running wire (F), within which the wire runs, and which is at least as wide as the seam. - Controllers (3-6) and a control switch (30), in response to the sensor, turn the wire (F) in one or other direction abouts its longitudinal axis, in relation to the position of the seam in the working band width (B).
