PURPOSE:The titled copolymer excellent in gas permeability, mechanical strength and heat resistance and useful for selective gas separation membranes, obtained by modifying the terminals of at least either polymer of polyphenylene oxide and polysulfone with a halogen or the like and polymerizing these polymers. CONSTITUTION:The molecular terminals of at least either of polyphenylene oxide comprising repeating units of formula I (wherein X is alkyl, alkoxy, halogen or aryl, Y is a substituent at position 5 or 6 and is nitro or X, and X and Y are not alkoxy groups at the same time) and polysulfone comprising repeating units of formula II (wherein Z is arylene) are modified with a halogen compound in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (e.g., tetrabutylammonium hydrogensulfate), and these two polymers are polymerized by heating in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst in a solvent such as toluene to obtain the titled copolymer consisting of a linear block copolymer of a logarithmic viscosity of 0.1-0.5 (as measured in CHCl3 at 0.5g/dl and 25 deg.C).
