NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I (R and R' are 1-10C straight-chain alkyl, or straight-chain alkoxy; X is halogen). EXAMPLE:A compound shown by the formula V. USE:An electro-optical display material (liquid crystal) having high DELTAn (anisotropy of refractive index) and improved characteristics capable of adjusting easily DELTAn by blending it with an existing liquid crystal composition. PREPARATION:A compound shown by the formula II is reacted with iodine and periodic acid dihydrate in acetic acid, water, or carbon tetrachloride to give a compound shown by the formula III, which is reacted with a compound shown by the formula V in the presence of dichloro-bis(triphenylphosphine) palladium (II) and cuprous iodide as a catalyst in diethylamine or N,N- dimethylformamide, to give a compound shown by the formula I.
