PURPOSE:To rapidly perform the continuous handling of a large quantity of sheets, by providing a first feed means for receiving the large number of sheets in a stacked state and then conveying them to a takeout position, and by returning the first feed means to a receiving position after the sheets are transferred from the first feed means to a second feed means. CONSTITUTION:After an untied sheaf of sheets such as paper money is received from a send-out port 50 by the backup 52 of the first feed mechanism 51A of a sheet feeder 51, the backup is moved horizontally and then vertically to a position P2 on a takeout unit 5C so that the sheets are conveyed one by one by a takeout roller 80. At the same time, a second feed mechanism 51B is operated so that a backup 65 is moved up from a stand-by position P4 and then backwards, and is thereafter crossed with the first backup 52 and moved up further to a takeout section P2. Immediately after the first backup 52 has transferred remaining sheets to the second backup 65, the first backup is moved down to an untied sheaf receiving position P1 and receives a next sent untied sheaf of sheets. The sheets can thus be conveyed one after another to the takeout unit 5C, with a very small time loss, to feed the sheets.
