PURPOSE:To obtain the optimum picture input system to the information processing unit used mainly for the purpose of preparation of documents, by providing an original size input means to input the size of a read original and a screen indication means to area designate a part or all of the display of a screen display means. CONSTITUTION:First, a picture of a original read out is displayed in reduced form, all pictures are confirmed by a operator, and only the picture of a part required among them is area designated. Then, a picture signal in its area designated is input picture. Then, a picture display section 3 is, for example, composed of a CRT (cathode-ray tube) display device, and as shown in figure, its display screen configuration is of vertical p dots and horizontal q dots. The display control section 4 controls the display in this screen display section, mainly has two display mode; namely, the text mode to perform the display processing in character unit and the graphic mode to perform the display processing in dot units, and is provided with a VRAM (video RAM) to store the data to be displayed in the respective modes. In order to display a picture in the portion of 1 sheet of a read manuscript in the screen display section 3, it is enough to reduce the picture in size.
