The method makes it possible to vary the speed of a turbine between 85% and 65% of the nominal speed or between 100% and 85% of the nominal speed. Such a turbine (6) forms part of a plant comprising a steam-raising unit (1) supplying steam at a pressure which is higher than the critical pressure of the steam. This plant further comprises a water feed pump (16) making it possible to maintain the pressure in the steam-raising unit (1) at this higher pressure, a pressure-reducing valve (2) and a control valve (5) for the turbine (6). The speed of the turbine (6) is varied by keeping the control valve (5) in a completely or partially open position, by keeping the pressure- reducing valve (2) in a completely open position, and by causing the flow rate of the water feed pump (16) to vary so that the pressure of the steam in the steam-raising unit (1) varies within the range located between the specified hypercritical pressure and a pressure which is slightly higher than the critical pressure. <IMAGE>
