PURPOSE:To correct a change with the lapse of short time by a simple arrangement without requiring a reference light source by selecting the maximum of the addition signals from groups of photomultiplier tube (PMT) classified in prescribed groups and executing a wave crest analysis, etc., to control the amplification factors. CONSTITUTION:The maximum of the output signals through adders 6 of the PMT groups classified as the mutually adjacent PMTs 3 belong to different groups is selected and outputted by a multiplexer 9 through a maximum detector circuit 21 These outputs are compared in a wave crest analyzer 14 with output wave crest values corresponding to the positions of the PMT 3 from a level supply circuit 13 controlled by conversion PROM 12 outputting the PMT number, PMT position signals, and a position computing circuit 5 responsive to the received light volume, etc. The values corresponding to the statistic deviation of the amplification factors from the counter memory 15 of the RAM are outputted and the amplification factor control information of a resistor 17 is corrected through a data processing circuit 16. In such a manner, a changes with the lapsed of time of the PMTs can be corrected in parallel in a short period by a simple arrangement directed only to the maximum sum output without requiring any reference light source.
