PURPOSE:When the titled compound which is used as a fungicide is prepared by reaction between 8-oxyquinoline and salicylic acid, an inorganic copper salt is used in an aqueous medium under alkaline conditions to enable easy ad inexpensive improvement in yield by no use of organic solvents. CONSTITUTION:8-Oxyquinoline and salicylic acid or thiosalicylic acid or their substituted derivative are used as feedstocks and they are allowed to react with an inorganic copper salt such as copper sulfate in an aqueous medium under alkaline conditions at room temperature to 100 deg.C, preferably 75-85 deg.C. The base is preferably sodium hydroxide and the amount is 2-3mol based on 8-oxyquinoline. The inorganic copper salt is preferably crystalline copper sulfate and the amount is equimolar. Further, the amount of the aqueous medium is 0.5-5l per mol of the quinoline.
