In a pneumatic tyre (T) for construction vehicles and heavy vehicles, a carcass (2) is provided which is attached by wrapping the carcass layers about the bead cores (1). Outside the carcass layer there is a multi-layer belt (3) whose innermost layer (3b) extends down to a level (h) which is measured from the base of the groove and constitutes from 30% to 50% of the overall height (H) of the cross-section of the tyre measured from the base of the groove as far as the outer face of the rubber (4) of the tread. <IMAGE>
