An insulating body for vehicle exhaust silencers comprises a winding of a mineral wool layer and a braiding fixed inside the winding. According to the new method the body is formed in that a band of a resinous mineral wool layer is first wound around a tube (or a core), the inside diameter of which is essentially equal to the outside diameter of the braiding; this is followed by heating in order to bond the mineral wool layer. The tube is then withdrawn and a prepared braiding, which for support is provided with a metal spiral, is introduced into the receiver thus obtained. Finally the braiding is fixed to the mineral wool winding by means of adhesive. In this way an insulating body is obtained with braiding over the entire passage length.
