The invention specifies a method for cleaning contact lenses by means of one or more cleaning agents, the duration and type of cleaning being determined by the desired order in which cleaning agents are present in packaged form in a storage vessel and are fed in this order, in each case one cleaning agent being dissolved in a basic solution and the contact lenses being flushed by the rinsing liquid for a predetermined period of time at a specific temperature, the rinsing liquid then being drained off and the same rinsing process being repeated with the next cleaning agent until all rinsing agents from the storage vessel are used up. By means of a device for cleaning contact lenses by means of one or more automatically working cleaning agents, it is possible to provide a device which comprises a rinsing vessel having a sealable liquid inlet and a sealable outlet for the accommodation of a rinsing liquid, a cleaning-agent feed device located essentially above the rinsing liquid, a stirrer with drive for mixing and agitating the rinsing liquid in the rinsing vessel, a contact lens receptacle arranged in the rinsing vessel below the maximum filling height, and an electronic control device for the controlled, automatic cleaning process.
