A lifting appliance for lifting and lowering loads, on the housing of which a load hook is rotatably mounted. Furthermore, the load hook is pivotably mounted about two pivot axes disposed at right angles to its rotation axis and to one another. In this respect a universally movable load-suspension point with a rotatable load hook is realised. In addition, the rotation and pivot axes are acted upon by brake elements in such a way that the load hook is braked in all positions just to such an extent that it stops in each desired position. This makes it considerably easier to put the lifting appliance into a rope loop, for example, even if the rope loop has considerable rigidity, because the preselected load-hook position is not changed by putting the lifting appliance into the rope loop. The load hook or the lifting appliance is automatically set in the correct position only when loading occurs. <IMAGE>
