The necessary variability of the timing points of a valve timing gear, primarily for internal combustion engines, for preventing throttle losses in the induction and working stroke at partial load is realised in the present application in the same way as a conventional cam shaft control, with recovery of the energy expended in valve actuation, in that the opening and closing sequence is performed by 2 different control cams running at an adjustable phase angle to the crankshaft. At the same time the valves are spring-loaded in the closing direction in the conventional way. A mechanical drive is chosen in which a correspondingly supported control lever (for example a rocker 5) is so actuated by the two control cams (1 and 2) that the valve is opened only when both control cams are run out (in position 1). By corresponding selection of the phase position of the four control cams - two per valve - the four timing points can be adjusted as required. <IMAGE>
