PURPOSE:To select automatically bar code by inputting parallelly to a demodulation processor having logic of locating optimal start/stop code classified by kind, with bar code width corresponding timer values. CONSTITUTION:Processors 11a, 11b, 11c are provided to carry out demodulation according to each kind of bar code. As task for each kind of demodulation processing bar code to be read out data consecutively, locating the start/stop code of the bar codes, demodulation processing is worked parallelly. The bar code bar width corresponding timer value T from the bar reading sensor is input parallelly into the demodulators 11a, 11b, 11c and the respective processors execute their task. At the respective demodulation processors, various checking parts 12a, 12b, 12c carry out necessary check with logics for locating start/stop code inserted in each processor. Regarding the various bar codes where final demodulation is carried out, check is made at the double check part 13, and a signal bar code data D is output to the host unit. Thus, automatic code selection is possible with improved reading rate.
