Automatic tensioning mechanism for the belt of belt conveyors

The invention relates to belt conveyors which, in particular, are applied in open cast working. The object of the automatic tensioning mechanism consists in optimising the value of the pretension forces of the belt depending on the resistances to movement of the latter, in the elimination of the slipping of the belt on the drive drum and in making the course of the starting process more gentle. The essence of the invention consists in connecting the drive units, which are suspended on the shaft of the drive drum, to the tensioning drum by means of a cable system. The mechanism brings about the belt tensioning forces by means of the weight of the drive units and the moment of the reaction caused by the torque on the drive drum. The mechanism ensures the axial guiding of the tensioning drum independently of the weight and torque of the drives. The mechanism functions continuously and has an effect on the increase of torque on the drive drum by means of an increase in the band tensioning force, the duration of the adjustment taking some tenths of a second. The tensioning mechanism reacts to permanent and elastic strain of the belt and also to strain of the belt brought about by temperature changes. The invention can be applied in belt conveyors, in particular conveyors conveying with an incline and horizontally, in various branches of industry and commerce.
