PURPOSE:To make it possible to reduce the irregularity in the diffusion resistance between electrochemical elements by controlling diffusion resistance to a predetermined value, by applying processing to an electrochemical element structure so as to change the diffusion resistance of the internal space of said structure. CONSTITUTION:A spacer member 14 having a notch part 12 and a lid member 16 are laminated to an electrochemical cell 8 wherein a pair of electrodes 4, 6 are integrally provided to a substrate 2 comprising a solid electrolyte to form a predetermined flat space 10. Subsequently, thus constituted electrochemical element structure is heated to operational temp. in a gaseous atmosphere to be measured wherein the concn. of gas to be measured is known and a DC power source 18 is connected between the electrodes 4, 6 to measure a current value by an ammeter 20. Laser processing is applied to the part in the vicinity of the inlet part of the flat space so as to set said current value to a predetermined value and the predetermined parts of the solid electrolyte 2, the spacer member 14 and the lid member 16 are cut off to make it possible to obtain an electrochemical element with constant quality.
