PURPOSE:To form an optical fiber bundle having superior image transmission characteristics by blocking one terminal part of a glass pipe into which optical thin rods are inserted and by making through holes for discharging etching gas near the terminal part in the manufacture of the optical fiber bundle by bundling may optical thin rods in one body. CONSTITUTION:On the terminal part of a quartz glass pipe 1 is blocked with a blocking plate 21 and in a circumferential tube wall near it, small-diameter through holes 22 are made; and optical thin rods 3 each consisting of a core glass layer and a cladding glass layer are arrayed and inserted into the glass pipe 1 and at the other terminal part of the glass pipe 1, a gas introduction opening 5 is formed. Then, the glass pipe 1 is heated and etching gas (e.g. BBr3) is introduded from the introduction opening 5 and discharged from the through holes 22 to each away dirt on the surface of the optical thin rod 3, and the pipe is made solid by being heated by a heating means (e.g. oxyhydrogen burner) 6 to form an optical bundle having none of mixed air bubbled, foregin matter, etc. |
