PURPOSE:To produce the titled crystalline high-MW polymer of a good hue, by polycondensing a specified aromatic diisocyanate with isophthalic acid in the presence of an alkali metal compound in a specified solvent. CONSTITUTION:Poly(4-methyl-1,3-phenyleneisophthalamide) is produced by polycondensing tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate with isophthalic acid by heating at a reaction temperature >=100 deg.C in the presence of an alkali metal compound selected from among an alkali metal polycarboxylate of formula I, an alkali metal carbonate of formula II, an alkali metal hydrogencarbonate of formula III and an alkali metal hydroxide of formula IV in a solvent comprising an alkyleneurea compound of formula V. In the above formulae, R is null or an organic group reactive with neither a COOH group nor an NCO group, M is an alkali metal, l is 0-3, m is 1-4, l+m=2-4 and n is 2 or 3.
