PURPOSE:To obtain the titled optical fiber having superior transmission characteristics, hydrogen resistance, resistance to radiation, etc. by constituting of a core comprising quartz contg. a specified amt. of Cl2, a clad comprising quartz contg. F and/or B2O3, and a support layer. CONSTITUTION:A porous parent material prepd. to a bar by depositing sooty fine glass particles obtd. from SiCl4, etc., by the VAD process is transformed to transparent glass in He atmosphere contg. thionyl chloride to obtain thus a quartz parent material for core contg. >=800ppm Cl2. Then, a glass layer for clad comprising quartz contg. F and/or B2O3 is deposited to the outside periphery of the parent material from outside by CVD process. Thes, a quartz tube for support is clad to the outside periphery of the clad layer as a jacket. The parent material for the optical fiber is drawn by a hot drawing means to obtain thus the titled optical fiber 1 consisting of a core 2 comprising quartz contg. >=800ppm Cl2, a clad 3 comprising quartz contg. F and/or B2O3, and a support layer 4. |
