PURPOSE:To make a magnetic tape display fully its performance by allowing a surface sliding and contacting a tape-guided magnetic tape to be a fine surface where 520-700pcs/2mm of a minute protuberance (less than 0.0153mum per each) are scattered at a space of 2mm. CONSTITUTION:In view of a relation among the minute number of peaks of tape guide and drop-out (D.O.) as well as friction coefficient where the most serious contact seems to occur at a great frequency with a magnetic tape, it is possible to obtain a good result in the case where the minute number of peaks < the number of peaks smaller than 0.0153mumRmax > are more than 520pcs. at a state of 2mm of measuring length. Furthermore, if the minute protuberances become too many, a magnetic tape base, during its repeat running, is so likely to have many flaws that it is preferable to have its minute protuberances amounting 700pcs/2mm at most.
