PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF 3,3'-OR 3,4'-DIAMINOBENZOPHENONE

3,3'-or 3,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane were prepd. by catalytic redn. with H2 and dechlorination by redn. catalyst of dinitrobenzophenone of formula (I) [X = Cl or 4 or 6 position; Y = H or Cl, but when Y = H the NO2 is at 3' or 4' position and when Y = Cl it is at 4' position with the NO2 at 3' . Thus, 3-or 4-O2NC6H4COCl was nitrobenzolated with PhCl and mononitrated to the 4,3-Cl (O2N)6H3 deriv., followed by chlorinolysis-hydrogenation over e.q.) Pd/C. Title compds. are monomers of high mol. wt. intermediates to agro- and pharmaceutical chemicals, dyes, esp. polyamides and polyimides.
