PURPOSE:To separate a color original into colors stably by arranging reference color parts near the original on a platen and correcting colors of the color picture at the original read time on a basis of picture signals corresponding to individual reference colors. CONSTITUTION:A reference color display plate 14 of plural colors is arranged on the upper face in the end part of platen glass 11 on which an original 12 is placed, and three fluorescent lamps 16R, 16G, and 16B which irradiate the original 12 are arranged under the glass 11, and a mirror 19 for the reflected light from the original, a lens 17, and an image sensor 18 are provided under these lamps. The sensor 18 reads the reference color display plate before reading and scanning the original 12 and stores read data in a correction control part 27. The sensor reads and scans the original 12 and inputs color signals 24R, 24G, and 24B to a color correcting circuit 25. The circuit 25 corrects signal levels of individual colors from the original 12 in accordance with compensation data 26R, 26G, and 26B of individual colors based on data from the reference color display plate which is stored in the circuit 27, and corrected picture signals 28R, 28G, and 28B are outputted.
