A bidirectional optical multiplexer and demultiplexer, called Bomudex, is described. It can be used as passive out-of-area device in a bidirectional subscriber line system. The bidirectional wavelength-division multiplex signal transmitted on a first optical fibre 1 is divided into individual signals by wavelength-selective means, depending on the direction of transmission, and assembled from single signals. One single signal per direction of transmission is in each case transmitted by further optical fibres 5.
