PURPOSE:A high dielectric liquid crystal composition that is composed of several kinds of chiral smectic liquid crystals with molecular chins of almost same length, thus giving optical switch elements of extremely high response speed, because it has large autogenous polarization and long pitch. CONSTITUTION:The objective liquid crystal composition is composed of 3 or more kinds of chiral smectic liquid crystals in which the difference in molecular chain length does not exceed the chain length corresponding to the 5C straight alkyl chain. As the liquid crystals stated above, are preferably compounds of formula I [m, n are 1, 2; X is one of formulas II-VII, single bond; R is 1-18C alkyl, alkoxy; Y is alkyl, alkoxy(carbonyl), alkanoyl(oxy) bearing an asymmetric carbon].
