PURPOSE:To obtain the titled novel substance useful as a liquid crystal component, etc., soluble in all organic solvents from high polarity to low polarity, insoluble in water, by reacting a cellulosic substance with butylene oxide in an organic solvent in the presence of an alkali. CONSTITUTION:A cellulose substance such as powder pulf, etc. is reacted with 1,2-butylene oxide (BO for short) in an organic solvent (preferably hydrophobic organic solvent such as n-heptane, etc.) in the presence of an alkali such as caustic soda, etc., to give the aimed substance having >=3mol substitution degree of hydroxybutyl group per glucose anhydride unit. In the production of the substance, on the concrete, 100pts.wt. cellulosic substance is blended with 5-35pts.wt. alkali, 20-160pts.wt. water and 1,000-1,500pts.wt. organic solvent, stirred at 10-30 deg.C for 0.5-2hr, then 300-500pts.wt. BO is added to the blend, and the reaction is carried out at 70-120 deg.C for 25-60hr.
