PURPOSE:To protect a fuel cell from poisoning effect of carbon monoxide when the concentration of carbon monoxide gas exceeds allowable value and make it compact by separating hydrogen gas in the reformed and converted hydrogen rich gas from the other gas at a position between a converter and a fuel cell body. CONSTITUTION:Fuel gas mixed with steam in the ejector 4 is subjected to steam reforming reaction in the reacting portion 2a of a reformer 2, and then flows into a shift converter 3. Unreacted carbon monoxide is used again to convert steam into hydrogen gas in the converter 3. Hydrogen rich converted gas 61 thus obtained is perfectly separated into hydrogen and the other gas in a hydrogen filtering device 5. Pure hydrogen gas 63 is introduced to the hydrogen pole 1a in a cell body 1. The gas separated and exhausted by the device 5 contains unreacted fuel and carbon monoxide gas, so the gas is sent into the burning portion 2b of the reformer 2 and used as a heat source for reforming reaction in the reformer 2. Accordingly, degradation of platinum catalyst due to poisoning effect of carbon monoxide does not take place. |
