NEW MATERIAL:The 2-(5-fluoronicotinoyl)acetic acid derivative of formula I (R<1> is group capable of forming carboxyl-protecting group; R<2> is halogen, hydroxy, 3-aminopyrrolidinyl, piperazinyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, arylthio, alkanesulfonyloxy, or arenesulfonyloxy; X is H or F) and its salt. EXAMPLE:2-(2,4-Difluorophenylamino)-5-fluoro-6-hyroxynicotinoylacetic acid ethyl ester. USE:Intermediate for 1-aryl-1,4-dihydro-4-oxonaphthyridine derivative exhibiting strong bactericidal effect against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, and its salt. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting the reactive derivative of the compound of formula II at the carboxyl group with the compound of formula III or its salt.
