In a sewing machine comprising a bed having a work supporting surface, a standard rising from the bed, a bracket arm catilevered from the standard over the bed, and a head on the bracket arm carrying a reciprocable needle bar, the rear part of the standard and bracket arm are higher than the front part to present an upwardly and rearwardly inclined upper surface which carries operating controls and is substantially perpendicular to the line of vision of an operator. Frames, illuminating. A bed 10, having a work surface 11, is formed at one end with a raised rim 16 to which is attached, by screws 17, the lower end of a standard 18, the front wall 21 of which is lower than the back wall 22. A bracket arm 19, cantilevered from the standard, has a back wall which is an extension of,and is the same height as,wall 22. The front wall 28 of the bracket arm is lower than the back wall, and is disposed in a plane which is in dined rearwardly and downwardly at approximately 45 degrees to surface 11 and intersects the rear edge of the latter. The upper edge 32 of wall 28 is disposed rearwardly of the vertical plane XX through the longitudinal middle line of surface 11. The bracket arm ends in a head 20 having a portion which extends forwardly of plane XX and which carries the inclined needle bar 61. The bottom wall 40 of head 20 is formed with recesses 42, 43 housiing electric lamps 44 for illuminating surface 11. The free end of head 20 is closed by a detachable plate 41. The bracket arm and standard are braced by webs 34 and 35 respectively. The upper surface of the bracket arm and standard is constituted by a detachable cover 29 which is secured to the upper edge of the rear wall by spring clips 33, and which is inclined to surface 11 at approximately 45 degrees. A hood portion 45 extending from cover 29 shrouds the top and rear portions of head 20. Cover 29 may be made from a light plastics material in various colours. Drive, connecting upper and lower shafts. A motor 25, mounted in bed 10 beneath standard 18, drives a bed shaft 78 via gearing 79, 80. Shaft 78 is coupled to an arm shaft 69 via a shaft 76 and gearing 75, 77. Stitch forming. The needle bar 61 is connected by a link 74 to one arm of a bell crank lever 72 pivoted on a fixed pin 73. The other arm of lever 72 is connected by a link 71 to a crank pin on a disc 70 fast with the arm shaft 69. Needle 64 cooperates with a vertical axis rotary hook 65 driven by gearing from the bed shaft 78. Access to the rotary hook is provided by an aperture in surface 11 covered by a sliding plate 68. A thread take-up eye 85 is formed on one arm of a lever 81 and projects beyond hood 45. Lever 81 is pivoted at 82 to one end of an anchor link 83 pivoted at its other end on a fixed pin 84. The other arm of lever 81 is pivoted to a pin 86 carried by an arm 87 extending from the crank disc 70. Presser bars, feed. The presser bar 90 is slidable in a sleeve 91. A compression spring 92 is interposed between bar 90 and a bar 93 slidable in a sleeve 94. The upper end of bar 93 is engaged by one end of an arm 95 pivoted at its other end on the fixed pin 84. A cam 96 engages arm 95 and is turnable by a knurled wheel 98, projecting through hool 45, to vary the pressure on bar 90. The latter may be raised by a lever 101. The presser foot 99 cosoperates with a feed dog 100 carried by a feed bar 102 pivoted at one end to a crank 103 on a feedadvance shaft 104, and connected at its other end by a link 133 with a crank 132 on a feed-lift shaft 130. A crank 139 on the latter is connected by a link 138 to a crank 137 on a rock shaft 136 carrying a forked arm 135 embracing on eccentric 134 on the arm shaft 69. An eccentric 108 on shaft 69 is embraced by a forked arm 106 on a rock shaft 107, and a crank 109 on the latter is connected by a link 110 to a bracket 111 pivoted on a fixed pin 112. A slide rod 113 on bracket 111 carries a slide block 114 which is connected by a link 115 to a crank 117 on shaft 104. One arm of a bell crank lever 118, pivoted on a fixed pin 119, is connected by a link 120 to link 115. The other arm of lever 118 projects slidably through a slot 121 in cover 29 and carries a knob 122, manipulation of which thereby serves to regulate the feed.</p>
