In order, where possible, to avoid damage to cells on fusion in a process for the electrofusion of cells in which the cells contained in a cell suspension are exposed to a field pulse which perforates the membrane of these cells, and are then, at the latest, brought into membrane contact with one another so that these cells fuse, it is proposed that sound waves are generated in the cell suspension, owing to which the cells are collected in regions of planes standing at right angles to a direction of propagation of the sound waves and having a spacing of half a wavelength, and thus the membrane contact necessary for fusion is set up.
