A device for depicting touchable characters e.g. Braille characters having a horizontally arranged hole pattern board which contains holes, arranged in lines and columns, and ball channels (2...6) attached thereto for receiving vertically displaceable balls (7). The balls (7) can be fixed in their upper end positions and, in this case, project partially beyond the surface of the board and thus, with the projecting spherical surfaces, form the pattern elements of the characters to be depicted in each case. The invention consists in the fact that a circulating belt (12) is used for the final raising and fixing of the balls (7), forming the pattern elements, in their upper end position or for fixing further balls (9) which are connected resiliently to the balls (7) forming the pattern elements. Said belt (12) is guided transversely to the ball channels (2...6) in the line or column direction and is provided with at least one passage opening (13) in each case for these balls (9) per line and column. The belt (12) is synchronised in its movement with the control (14, 15) of an upwardly directed airflow (19) through the channel (5) exposed in each case by the passage opening (13), the airflow (19) being activated either for raising the balls (9, 7) into their upper end positions or for holding the balls (9, 7) located in the upper end positions. <IMAGE>
